I've been contacted by a Mr Corey Vandall coreyvandall@yahoo.com from something called Bank Markazi Antnapolistan, from which he has promised to send me a set of Dinar banknotes. Antnapolistan is supposedly a secretive US-based Islamic group with over 1000 members that is seeking sovereignty - although where, when and how is uncertain. One Ahmad Rashad is the group's head, and his policy of secrecy forbids the creation of a website or any other means of independently verifying the group's actual existence. Antnapolistan Dinars are allegedly used as a means of exchange between group members "for just about anything you can imagine". The current banknotes apparently replaced an earlier system of "Treasury Emergency Currency Certificates" in 2002. It will be interesting to see what actually turns up in my mailbox.

That is so neat! I'm eager to see the banknotes even though I don't collect them. The whole secrecy thing is very tantalizing!!

I had all but forgotten about this when a set of 5 reasonably attractive multicoloured banknotes turned up in my postbox earlier this week, accompanied by a letter pleading with me to "tell people" about Antnapolistan to help "our cause" (whatever that may be).
They originated from the aforementioned Corey Vandall, who hails from an address in Rhode Island.
The banknotes are in 1, 5, 10, 20, 100, 250 and 1000 Dinar denominations, and are printed on plain coloured paper via a combined offset lithographic and laser process.
One side features a camel, a device presumed to be Antnapolistan's "coat of arms", a British Imperial Crown (which Mr Vandall claims is actually the "Crown of Allah") and a number of Arabic inscriptions stating the serial number, denomination, names of signatories and of an Islamic religious nature.
Interestingly, on the 1 Dinar note the Arabic word for "one" - "wahid" - is, for some reason wrong. Mr Vandall did not provide a convincing explanation for the error, other than to say it is "in a different form". However, having just completed a 10-week course in the subject I can confirm that it is most certainly not a variation - it is a totally different word.
The year series on all notes is given as "2002-2005". Mr Vandall ignored my question about why an Islamic religious organisation like Antnapolistan would use the Gregorian calendar in preference to the Islamic one.
The other side of the notes is inscribed in English and Arabic. The 4 higher values feature another camel, while the 3 lower values feature Buddhist stupas and a Christian church respectively. Apparently the choice of non-Islamic religious buildings has "no siginificance".
I've had several email communications with Mr Vandall since receiving these notes, and am now convinced by the evasive tone of his responses that "Antnapolistan" is nothing more than a fantasy concocted by 1 or 2 overly imaginative youngsters.
The population, previously stated as "about 1000" has doubled to 2000, and apparently "all of them" now use Antnapolistan's Dinars "all the time" - to the extent that "thousands have been printed" - and they continue to be printed to "keep up with demand".
Despite this, the "dictatorship" that runs Antnapolistan has managed to keep the entire operation so totally invisible to the outside world, and there is still not a single third party source - not even a single photograph - available to verify any of Mr Vandall's claims.
Personally, I don't mind people who enjoy inventing fantasies of this nature, but I do have a problem with outright liars - and I'm afraid that is precisely what we are dealing with in this instance.
However, the notes themselves are quite pretty, and worth getting hold of for those interested in such things.

A Google search turned up this German site, which confirms the existence of an earlier Antnapolistan banknote series. It also confirms that Antnapolistan is a fantasy micronation run by Mr Vandall from Rhode Island: www.banknoten-der-welt.de/html/antnapolistan.htmlGeorge

Oh, now I remember (reading the original message-thread), they don't have a site...so I can't re-visit if I never visited to begin with...great info nonetheless!! The notes depicted in that German site remind me of one of the Transnational Republics notes I have. Similar colors and artistry. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a connection there...

Several days ago I received a rambling, abusive email from someone purporting to be Mr Habib Al-Shaqier, "Financial Manager", advising that Corey Vandall's actions in contacting me and sending me banknotes was "illegal", demanding that all references to Antnapolistan be immediately removed from the USNS website, and threatening dire unspecified consequences should we fail to comply with this ominous directive by Saturday (2 days ago).
The tone of the communication in question is hysterical - in all senses of the word - and convinces me more than ever that we are dealing with, at most, a couple of over-imaginative children.
I'm happy to forward it, along with my response to anyone wanting a bit of a chuckle.

Hi George- I'd love to read that e-mail; maybe there are some folks in the group who are fervently serious about the whole secrecy/underground thing... I also did a Google search, and it turned up a current eBay auction and Turkish (?) auctions (at gittigidiyor.com) of the notes: cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8314480985www.gittigidiyor.com/php/urun.php?id=838418Here is a portion of the text from the eBay description: Q: Where is Antnapolistan Located and what is the capital: A: Antnapolistan is located among the town of North Scituate, Rhode Island and the capital is Shiton-Hia. Q: How much is the population of Antnapolistan: A: Approximately about 3,500 people. Q: When was Antnapolistan established: A: Antnapolistan was founded in 1989. Q: Where does the name of the Antnapolistan Organization came from: A: Antnapolistan comes from the nations first great leader, Anthony Napolitano. They took "Ant" from Anthony and "Napoli" from Napolitano and then added "stan" like then end of some Islamic country for example Pakistan, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan… etc. Q: Why the Government of Antnapolistan does not try to make their currency exchangeable in the U.S banks: The Government of Antnapolistan tried to make an exchangeable currency but the government of the U.S.A did not allow them, so the government of Antnapolistan made a private issue of currency which is the Antnapolistan Dinar that we are selling on eBay. * Note: If you have any comment or question about the Organization please feel free to E-mail this address Coreyvandall@yahoo.com * Warning: This note is not exchangeable in all U.S.A banks but you can use it when you go to Antnapolistan. Please feel free to contact me by: E-mail: Beydoun_co@hotmail.com

Fascinating. That population seems to be growing at a phenomenal rate. Since January it has jumped from 1000 to 2000 to 2500 to 3500 ! The German website also refers to an earlier banknote series being denominated in "Pesos", so maybe there's a Mexican connection. In addition I just noticed that on the first set of "Dinars" the word Dinar is mis-spelt - as "Di_ar". It seems the Antnapolistanis don't have much of a command of standard Arabic, on top of their other woes.

Well Mr. Vandall is an underage child who we had the mis-fortune of dealing with. Watch his spending if any of you are dealers it will be returned. We were informed he is a minor with a very very good imagination, not that that is bad but using a C.C w/o permission is.
