Hello!
I recently decided to learn more about the coins made by Bernard von NotHaus before he started NORFED. I learned about the Mint while doing my research for the write-up I did about NORFED for my LINKS site, but besides the small bit of info that is at the libertydollar.org site, there's not much to be found about the Mint. Here's what I wrote for my LINKS site:
ROYAL HAWAIIAN MINT: Founded in 1974 by Bernard von NotHaus. “Almost from the very beginning of the Mint, von NotHaus was drawn to create a new currency for Hawaii.” This initial aim was to include paper money. At its operational height, the Mint had seven different locations, with a main branch in Honolulu. In my personal communications with him, von NotHaus stated that he eventually “did over 700 issues in 25 years as Mintmaster”. During his longstanding quest, he conducted extensive reviews of various economic models, currencies, and financial systems, interspersed with a series of pecuniary experiments. His design process, development, and research continued until 1997, culminating in “a pet project” called the Hawaiian Sovereign Currency; this was a full-fledged proposal which was meant to exemplify a law-abiding, value-backed currency. But shortly thereafter, he devised NORFED and his blueprints “morphed” into a new undertaking, the Liberty Dollar. Though von NotHaus retired from the Mint in 1998, this is not to say he left the numismatic scene altogether (far from it! He now heads the aforementioned NORFED, as detailed in one of my earlier listings, in which the story picks up where this one leaves off).
I'm pretty sure that UWC will include a bunch of these (perhaps all?) in the forthcoming edition. I couldn't imagine someone going after all 700+/- issues for his or her collection, especially since many of them are very similar in appearance (very much like the NORFED coins), but many of them are pretty attractive. I ended up purchasing 3 RHM silver coins: a 1988 Hawaii Dala, a 1991 Princess Kaiulani Dala, and a 1991 Honolulu Dala. I've seen a few odd silver Hawaiian coins come up on eBay in the past, but I didn't know they were the NotHaus coins. I've seen a few more recently on eBay, too.
