Hi Klaus,
Several years ago I recall stumbling across a website for a German micronation based in a tourist hotel, that had issued its own coins - but when I went back to the website later it had vanished without trace.
I think these coins could be from that kingdom - the name sounds very familiar.

My original assumption was correct, this is the kingdom-in-a-hotel I was thinking of. Look at the main url: www.koenigreich-romkerhall.deThere are pictures of the throne room, royal coach etc... it all looks perfectly vulgar!

Here's a translation I got from Babelfish:
In the kingdom Romkerhall are available beside a large number of postcards also different Souvenire and memories. Different "Koenigsthaler coins" and intending coins will be available in silver, gold and platinum. Closer information and vorbestellungen are already now written or by fax possible. The Koenigsthaler will give it with the print to 1, 5 and 10. On this side you see the Aversabbildungen to fuenfer and decimals.

Make it perfect sense for English the translation! The results of Babelfish translations often remind me of English as She is Spoke - a famous 19th century English-Portuguese phrasebook by Pedro Carolino. Carolino refused to be hampered in his efforts by not actually speaking English, and not posessing a Portuguese-English dictionary - instead he made do with a Portuguese-French and then French-English dictionary to create some of the most memorable mangled English in history: www.freewilliamsburg.com/may_2003/carolino.html

Hi George! I did not know that! That is hilarious! Some of those phrases reminded me of how some of my Brazilian relatives would sound trying to speak English. It's not just a problem of knowing the right words, there's the grammatical structure that seems to be the most difficult thing to grasp. Sometimes, on the Jay Leno show, he will read the English "instructions" to some product manufactured overseas, and they are also indescribably funny. Erik

I phoned the Baron of Romkerhall and he was very interested. The Story is similar to Seborga and it is a former princely Estate, he got a Princess of Sachsen to accept to act as their Queen. The Lady is Princess by marriage and in her eighties and always short for money. So the Baron helped her out. However it is not just a PR Gag. He is going to send me more material which I will of course share with you. regards, Klaus

This is a little History. The Name of the Baron is Walter Lechner l , he was a architect in real Live. I assume the Sale on Ebay was a genious publicity Gag to get Visitors into the Hotel.
quote: Romkerhall (51°51’N, 10°26’E) was built as a hunting lodge by King Georg V. in the 19th century. Once belonging to the properties of the kingdom Hannover, the recent owner claims it was forgotten to attach it to a parish after monarchy had ceased in 1918 in Germany, and again after a general reformation of the parishes in Lower Saxonia in 1970. He succeeded to attract the princess Erina of Saxonia who had her enthronisation as Queen of Romkerhall in 1988. That day, Romkerhall was proclaimed “the smallest kingdom of the world”! (http://www.koenigreich-romk-erhall.de/) German aristocracy and government are in continuous quarrels with Romkerhall and tourism marketing…<br>end of Quote.
It is in the Lower -Saxony State, the Romke is a small River.
Love, Klaus
