At first, I did not like the idea at all . I am a coin collector. Yes, I do have currency notes, and quote a few of them are what I would call "fantasy issues", but that's not where my heart is . Nevertheless, after reading Chaim's post, I really like the idea . Sounds like a GREAT idea . Maybe the "freebies" should be stamped woth something, so only 1 would be redeamable for the coin, so no "free" coins will be given out . O.K., so how do we proceed in making this happen?

Hi!! Just to throw in my 2 nÛSeNSes worth into the "numismatics" discussion- I can accept including banknotes, although if we were to take a poll of all collectors in the world, we might get an even 50-50 split between those who think the word includes banknotes and those who think it doesn't. I didn't, but I can expand my definition. Personally, I never chose to collect banknotes, just like I didn't choose to collect stamps. I decided early on to focus on coins, then tokens. As for unrecognized states, micronations, fantasies, there have been perhaps hundreds that have issued banknotes. Can we really "afford" to include all of them here? And in regards to stamps, there have been possibly thousands that have issued their own local posts and cinderella stamps (here is a great link, for those interested: www.stampshows.com/local-post.html there are probably way more than these, too. Especially the one's he'd consider under the heading "bogus"; I'm sure this site doesn't even know of all the micro-nations that have issued stamps.) By the way George, taking all that into account, how come, in terms of stamps and banknotes (excluding coin-issuing entities in your listing such as Minerva, Seborga, Atlantis Project, Hutt, Katanga,), you have selected only Bumbunga (stamps), Rainbow Creek (banknotes, too), Rif (banknotes), Rose Island (stamps; I know you have heard about a possible coin, but I kind of doubt it), Sedang (stamps), South Kasai? I just wonder why you have focused on these 6. Erik

My personal collecting interests are strongly focused on unrecognised states that have a basis in reality, and whose stamp, coin and banknote issues are simply one aspect of their existence.
By that I mean that those entities don't just exist as a web page or a fantasy construct, but as a real entity whose existence is verified by media reportage and the existence of multiple physical artefacts as being made up of real people who have done things to create and influence real events in the real world. I tend to include only "serious" entities, and exclude "tongue-in-cheek" efforts (like the Conch Republic).
It's my way of keeping my collection manageable.
Having said that I do own a few fantasy pieces which I bought for the hell of it (and sometimes as investments), and I have also recently branched out into alternative currencies.

Hello All! I just heard back from Franck Medina, of Kamberra; he said that he would indeed be able to print a banknote for us; he asked for details, of course, but I told him we were still in the planning stages. It seems as though we will indeed mint a high-quality coin from a private mint in the future. For now, though, (maybe not right this exact minute, but in the nearer future) it seems that the idea of having a banknote was pretty popular. I then wondered about the cost of producing such a banknote- would this cost be comparable to the cost of having a different coin (not the "higher denomination" one we are thinking about getting from a private mint) minted by Tom Marringer. It seems to me that he might have the necessary capabilities (equipment, etc...) to mint a smaller coin that would look pretty darn good for our initial purposes. So if we still had a lingering desire to have a coin rather than a banknote, this might be a viable route... Should I set up a poll on this? or should people respond in this thread? Not that the results of the poll would mean that we would commit ourselves immediately to either project; I know some of our members would like to advertise a bit more and that does seem to be a pretty high priority. But when we DO get around to getting this coin or banknote project underway, at least then we will have a clearer direction. So, proceed with plans for a banknote produced by Mr. Franck Medina (I suggest you visit Kamberra if you are not familiar with his handiwork: www.kamberra.com ) OR consider having a coin produced by Tom Maringer? Design-wise, for a coin, I think one side is already spoken for: the USNS logo; so it is really only the remaining side that would need to be worked out simply, to include a denomination (we'll know which one when all the votes are tallied) and the year of issue.

Hello Group! Did anyone see my previous message, about Franck from Kamberra (he said he'd be able to make a banknote for us if we still wanted to). Now, Tom Maringer, of Shire Post, has said he will join the USNS very shortly. Without me even mentioning it, he asked if we had plans to mint a coin; he also sent me an imaga of a very nice-looking ANA coin he did (but I can't figure out how to attach it to this message). So we have both options open, in the future, when we decide which option (if any) we'd prefer. Erik
