Hey Klaus and Oded:
The link on Trebizond History is wonderful Klause.
Oded, you mentioned 1965 Trebizond issues. Did you mean 1955, or are there more recent coinage. The UWC 3rd lists a few 1955 coins, which I'll list below. These coins were issued by Michael III Comnenus, heir to the Trebizond throne, from Thessaly, Greece.
1955, 10 Centimes, copper, proof $ 25, 100 coins minted, Bruce X1, obv. portrait of Michael with 8 pointed star under truncation and date, rev. coat of arms and denomination
1955, 5 Francs, 25.0000 g, .900 silver, 0.7234 oz ASW, 100 coins minted, proof $65, Bruce X2, obv and rev. same except denomination
1955, 5 Francs, 28.2700 g, .900 gold, 0.8180 oz AGW, Rev. 900 and hallmark 483H at bottom, mintage and value unknown, Bruce X4
1955, 20 Francs, 6.4500 g, .900 gold, 0.1866 oz AGW, mintage 100, proof $225, Bruce X3, obv. rev. same except denomination
*** Proof Set: 1955 Proof Sets (3), mintage 100, Bruce XPS1, Value $300, ID X1-X3 WITH MEDAL
The Comnenus Family as alluded to on Klaus's web link, were one of the most powerful families in ancient Byzantium (East Roman) Empire and produced many Emperors, for Byzantium and Trebizond.

Hello Rolf:
What is your opinion??
The Comnenus and Paleologi families produced many Emperors for Byzantium (East Roman) over the centuries.
Do you feel that Michael III is a pretender or has a justified claim on the title (although most terrain has been lost to recognised states)??

As far as I'm aware the last direct descendant of the Paeleologi Emperors of the Eastern Roman Empire died in the 16th or 17th Century in Britain.
The last Emperor of Trebizond and all his immediate family were killed by the Ottomans when they conquered Trebizond.
Anyone claiming direct descent from either in the present day is a fantasist.
Of course there are likely to be indirect descendants - but by that reckoning I probably have as much right to claim the Byzantine throne as they do. Now there's an idea. ;D

Dear Ones, as to my Knowledge, there is no legal Claimant, Prince Michael is an Impostor. None of the Lascaris, Paleologos, Comemnos can proof their Claims. None of the real descendents in side branches claim anything. Look at : www.chivalricorders.org/index3.htmregards, Klaus

After reading all the info, we might think about adding a heading "pretenders & impostors" to the coin library... that would be more correct than listing Trebizond under "exile governments & royal houses" as it is now, would it not? ;D

Some Franco-Spanish bastard with a Napoleonic claim to blue blood maintains that website. His family were Falangists, and sworn enemies of all blue blood, especially those who were humanists, humanitarians, save that of their own land. These are bitter people, fighting over titles and lands lost eons ago. These people also recognize the claims of the Germanic pretenders to the throne of Greece, whom the Greeks booted out a while back, if you recall.
Those of us who are descended form Celtic notables know what this Saxonian collusion over the centuries has done to pedigrees. Blacksmiths of low wit and wisdom made instant nobles by claiming illegit descent....farraigh!
I know descendants of this house of Lascaris-Comemnos,and they absolutely can prove from whom they are descended better than most European wannabe nobles and they claim only their biological descent and what remains of their heritage, and the right to uphold the ancient moral and ethical standards. The papacy recognizes them, and so did the Hapsburgs, both in Austria and in Spain. FYI.
So, Klaus, go back to your books of tarnished pedigrees, and leave what is left of Byzantium and Trebizond alone.
