Blue Waters Mint continues with the monthly coin releases. This month it is a 12 millimeter, 1.2 gram .999 silver 1/4 coin for Talstyla. The coin was hammer struck. Designed and minted by Joe Paonessa and his son, Anthony, of Badger Mint, the coin represents the value of 2 Ortug, what was a 1/4 of a day's pay for farm work or a hired hand on a fishing boat. The Talstyla Ortug was converted as 1.1 to 1 Gotland Ortug in 1534. The 1534 Gotland Ortug was .54 gram. Featuring the signature lightning bolt, the island's name, Talstyla, means lightning stick or lightning rod in English. The island got its name as the first settlers came ashore during a summer thunderstorm and observing a limestone stack on the highest hill on the island being struck by lightning. Other coins in values of 4, 8 and 16 Ortug will be minted in the future. Larger coins will offer the image of the landscape and lightning strike. The coin had a mintage of 250 and was released 17 October 2012. The coin can be seen at www.bluewatersmint.com. Coin dealers such as Joel Anderson stock the coin. As always, the detailed story of the country, island or territory the coin represents is included with the coin which comes in a coin flip with Certificate of Authenticity offering details on the coin.
