The USNS online reference library can now be found here: www.usns.info/reference.htmlPlease send scans or details of any articles that should be added to this page and remember - articles do not necessarily need to have numismatic content to be relevant.

Hi George,
I made a proposal for a list of the (possible) country codes for the USNS catalogue, so that we'd not use codes twice. New locations can easily be integrated into this list.
As a basis for this list I used your original codes for the locations you'd catalogued originally (i.e. HRPC, SBC etc.), and added the codes I'd used previously on my own site (i.e. CHR, TOR, TRA).

Brilliant Chaim!
I was just thinking about this last night.
I think a 3 letter code across the board is the best option.
I was thinking of changing Shawnee Tribe to SHN and Freeedonia to FRE to conform with this principle.
The only non-standard number would then be my HRPC series, which is probably too well established to alter - or maybe not.
One question though - what about banknotes?
The codes I use on my own site for coins all end in C. My intention is to use B codes to denote banknotes and S codes for stamps, M codes for medals and E codes for ephemera.
I haven't yet implemented this because I've focused my attentions mostly on coins to date, but it is on my agenda.
It is easy for me to use a 2-letter code + a type qualifier in this way because I am only focused on a relatively short list of entities, however that may not be practical here. Any ideas?

Hi George, I've modified my original posting (intead of mailing a new list) so that the codes match (SHN, FRE) and changed ESP for Esperanto into ULE and PC for Poarch Creek Indians into PCI. Regarding banknotes, my original idea (which I used for the Christiania issues) could incorporate them as well. Numbering would then be ABC-A-001A, ABC being "country code", -A- being "type of item", 001 being "item number" and A being "variety". Banknotes would be designated B, Medals & medallic issues would be designated M. For the "coupon" 1 Stelo note of the Universala Liga the numbering would then be "ULE-B-001". Coins would be designated C except for those locations were coins come in parallel types in the same year (like Christiania and Repubblica del Nord); the "type of item" designation can be used to distinguish between "types" (for example CHR-F-001 for Christiania Fed issues and CHR-L-001 for Løn issues); this instead of using the "standard" C for coin. (See also www.home.zonnet.nl/shiboleth/christiania1.html)According to this system, the Hutt River coins become HRP-C-001A etc. instead of HRPC-001A, which does not change anything significant in the numbering... I wouldn't dare change a winning horse...!!! For Torgu (as well as for Seborga, TRans, Sealand etc.), the change would be small as well, for example TOR-C-001 instead of TOR-001. I don't know if we should give stamps and ephemera USNS numbers; after all, theyre not numismatic items. But, you could use the same system. No problem, we'll just reserve the letters S for Stamps and E for Ephemera. Regards, Chaim

That seems like a good idea to me.
Re stamps etc, I'm not proposing the USNS catalogue them at all - but I certainly will on my own site - and I want to ensure cat number formats are kept in general alignment.
